The Blue Mountains offers some of the most spectacular bushwalking in Australia. From easy strolls to challenging full-day adventures, there's a trail for everyone. After years of exploring these tracks, we've put together our definitive guide to the best walks near Katoomba.

Easy Walks (1-2 hours)

Prince Henry Cliff Walk

This paved clifftop path offers stunning views without the steep descents. Start at Echo Point and walk towards Leura for consistently breathtaking vistas of the Three Sisters and Jamison Valley.

Distance: 6km one way
Time: 2-3 hours
Best for: Families, photographers, those with limited mobility

Insider Tip

Start early in the morning to catch the sunrise light on the Three Sisters. The golden hour makes for incredible photos, and you'll beat the tour bus crowds.

Echo Point to Scenic World

A gentle walk along the cliff edge with multiple lookout points. The track is well-maintained and suitable for all fitness levels.

Distance: 2km one way
Time: 45 minutes
Best for: First-time visitors wanting iconic views

Moderate Walks (2-4 hours)

Grand Canyon Track

Our absolute favourite. This loop descends into a lush, fern-filled canyon with overhanging rocks and atmospheric grottoes. It feels like stepping into Jurassic Park.

Distance: 6km loop
Time: 3-4 hours
Best for: Nature lovers, photographers

"The Grand Canyon is magical after rain when the ferns are dripping and the light filters through the canopy. It's an experience you'll never forget."

Insider Tip

Pack a head torch even for daytime walks – the canyon can be quite dark in places, and it adds to the adventure!

Valley of the Waters

Descend past multiple waterfalls including the impressive Empress Falls. The climb back up is challenging but rewarding.

Distance: 5km circuit
Time: 3 hours
Best for: Waterfall enthusiasts, those wanting a workout

Challenging Walks (4+ hours)

National Pass

One of Australia's most iconic walks. The track is cut into the cliff face with stunning views, then descends to the valley floor before climbing back via the Grand Stairway.

Distance: 5km loop
Time: 4-5 hours
Best for: Experienced bushwalkers, adventure seekers

Six Foot Track

The classic multi-day hike from Katoomba to Jenolan Caves. Can be done as a one-day challenge for fit hikers or a relaxed 2-3 day adventure.

Distance: 44km one way
Time: 2-3 days
Best for: Experienced hikers seeking a multi-day adventure

Essential Tips

  1. Start early – The Blue Mountains gets crowded, especially at Echo Point. Starting before 8am means better parking and fewer people in your photos.

  2. Check conditions – After heavy rain, some tracks (especially the Grand Canyon) can be slippery. Check the NPWS website before you go.

  3. Bring layers – The mountains are 1000m above Sydney and significantly cooler. Weather can change quickly.

  4. Carry water – Even on short walks, hydration is important. There are no shops on the trails.

  5. Respect the environment – Stay on marked tracks and take all rubbish with you.

What to Pack

  • Water (at least 1L per person)
  • Snacks or lunch
  • Sun protection (hat, sunscreen)
  • Rain jacket (weather changes fast)
  • Good walking shoes with grip
  • Camera
  • First aid basics
